Though it would be nice to take up a nomadic lifestyle, most of Generation-Y has to travel during vacation time or during the holidays when they can get away from full time jobs and obligations. That time is certainly limited, so you want to learn how to make the most of the time you have off. Here are some tips that I have learned from fellow Generation-Y travelers with full time, corporate jobs and how they manage to make it work with their schedules.
Go somewhere you really want to.
Because you have a limited amount of time, you want to make sure that the location you are heading to is one that you really want to go to. Don’t be afraid of traveling solo or taking a tour if it takes you to a spot that you want to go. This is your time off—don’t be dissuaded by spending too much money or going to a location because your friends suggested it might be a good spot. This is the time to do what you want to and enjoy it.
Make sure every detail is in place.
When you have more free time to travel (like with my work—being a freelance travel writer means this is part of the gig), you have more time to plan the details of the trip. When you are working, it can be hard to get everything in order and make sure that your itinerary is in place. You might want consider looking into a travel agent. It can be worth a little extra money in order to make sure everything is ready to go and you can simply relax and enjoy your trip.
Look and see if your business will give you discounts.
Sometimes you can get discounted flights, hotel rooms, and other perks when you work through a certain company. Make sure to ask your supervisor or check with a hotel chain or two and see if it’s possible to get a bit of a break. Even if you end up saving a few hundred dollars, that can help a lot. Usually big corporations have more incentives like this, so it’s definitely worth doing a bit of research to find out in which ways you can save.
Relax and enjoy.
Traveling can be very stressful, but when you only have a certain amount of time off and you want to make the most of it, not getting too worked up about the minor snafus can be one of the best ways to thoroughly enjoy your vacation. Again, planning ahead or having someone else do it for you can make a huge difference in how much stress you will feel once you get there. Also, being willing to roll with the punches a bit can make everything run a lot smoother and can help you relax and appreciate your time off more.
