(on what he hopes to get out of living abroad…in Texas)
“So I met you in the Dominican Republic as a Teacher’s Assistant. You’ve pretty much lived there your whole life. Everything you know is there. And now, you are moving to Texas for a teaching certificate and leaving it all behind, at least for now. What do you hope to get out of living abroad?”
“I hope to find happiness for sure – not the up and down happiness that leaves you empty after a while but the happiness which stays, the kind of happiness many of us are trying to find in this life – whatever shape that happiness takes.
I hope to find love. I found love with a person that took this living abroad challenge; she helped me see life in a different way. The world is huge and I want to meet new people and explore the world and find myself involved in new cultures. What do they believe? What are their thoughts? How do I fit inside? It wasn’t the right time for us but I hope to find someone to share this future and life with because I believe that to feel happiness, we have to find love.
And I also hope to find happiness with that One who created me. I don’t know exactly who He is, but I know I’ll find it as long as I’m searching and, in DR, I was no longer searching. People search in different ways and I hope I’ll discover what I’m looking for by traveling and sharing my thoughts with different cultures, beliefs, and people.
I’m a wild spirit at heart. I enjoy challenges, and by taking this challenge, and starting a new life abroad, or wherever I feel I need to be or go, I hope to find the happinesses in life I’m looking for.
Sergio got his BA in Philosophy and Literature in Dallas and is now heading back to Dallas to get his teacher certification. Currently he is enjoying some time in Barcelona.
