Photos: The Schoolhouse courtyard, Pork and greens, pan fried mushroom ravioli, and a cheeseburger
In my last blog, I mentioned a wonderful restaurant we discovered when visiting the Great Wall at Mutianyu called The Schoolhouse (http://theschoolhouseatmutianyu.com/). It serves a mostly western cuisine and offers lovely garden tables, weather permitting. Not only is the food good, but the children’s menu is healthy and yummy, offering one of the best salads I have tasted in Beijing.
We spoke with one of the proprietors who told us that she and her partners had opened the restaurant in 2006. Long weekend residents, they wished to give something back to the community. The restaurant, which was converted from an old schoolhouse, sources all food locally and employs village housewives. In addition, they now offer overnight stays in renovated village houses.
Mutianyu is a lovely place to experience the Great Wall. The Schoolhouse makes it that much better. When our next visitor arrives on Friday, it will certainly be one our stops.
