Hawaii can really get under your skin. For me it’s a visceral feeling. And it’s not just because I’m on “vacation” (because there’s always work involved, even when I’m on vacation).
It’s the attitude of the Hawaiians. A laid-back feeling. It’s what some call “aloha.” But it’s well exemplified in this sign at one of our favorite little restaurants in Kapa’a, Mermaids.
We spent the last week on Kauai. We hiked. We surfed. We sunned. We ate. The only thing we didn’t do was (sadly) sleep in. We kept busy and as we were headed to the airport, I commented to Jon that I could have easily stayed another week to do more of the same (I wanted to do more hiking, I wanted to go to Glass Beach, I missed a half dozen restaurants I wanted to check out). And this was something like our 5th or 6th time on the island so you’d think we would have seen all there is to see. Nope.
Jon was likely happiest when he was out taking his yearly surf lesson (not bad for only getting out every 6 – 12 months, eh?).
I was likely happiest when I was taste-testing shave ice (yes, in the name of “research,” I visited a shave ice place every day we were there!).
As sad as it is to come back to gray and rainy Seattle after a week in warmth and sun, as Jon said, “We’re one day closer to our next Hawaii vacation.”
Aloha to that!
Travel Well,
Beth
