This lightweight wind-resistant jacket, the Lightbeam from Nau, just accompanied me on my trip to Bhutan. This is a technical windshell that also repels water (luckily I didn’t have to find that out for myself).
So what’s a technical windshell you ask?
Well, in this case, it’s a wind and water resistant jacket treated with a DWR finish that helps repel water. DWR, by the way, is a Durable Water Repellent coating and on the Lightbeam it’s use on the outside as well as the front zipper.
I was able to wear this on warmer days with just a light shirt underneath but also wear it over a fleece during the colder Himalayan nights. I could pull the wide collar (which also houses the rolled up hood) up around my neck, giving me some added warmth when needed.
What made this a super appealing travel piece for me was how lightweight it is (less than 9 ounces) and how well it packs down. I wore it on all of my flights but when it came time to carry it in a daybag, I just rolled it up and stuffed it in the bottom of my bag.
The Lightbeam is available in Caviar Stripe (what I own – best described as black and dark gray striped), Salt Stripe (pictured) and Zest Stripe (mustard-ish).
Available for $185 on the Nau site.
What I Love
- The hood rolls up and snaps shut so it’s only visible when you need it.
- Zippered side pockets are large enough to fit several items.
Not So Much
- I found the front zipper to stick quite frequently – getting caught on the inside material. I have to be diligent about zipping up or down in order for it not to stick.
- I’d like to see this with a bit trimmer fit for women. While not billowy, a trimmer cut would make it that much more fashionable.
- The website description says there’s an inside security pocket but I’ll be damned if I could find it. Hoping it exists and it’s just that well hidden.
Overall, an excellent spring piece for travel or home.
