On the Bookshelf
Bicycle Diaries
by David Byrne
By now, you may have heard him on NPR or seen him speak in your city. David Byrne – yes of Talking Heads fame – writes about his experiences as an urban bicyclist for the past 30 years. He rides while on tour and at home. This book is a mish-mash of his random musings of cities, from London to Sydney, as he’s peddled his way around the world on his fold-up bike. Available on Amazon.

Paris to Cuba
by Mario Grigorov
A little lounge-like, a little like Madelyn Peyroux, Paris to Cuba is comprised of a sultry selection of tunes that are meant to be ethereal. It’s pleasant. And I don’t mean that in a bad way – it’s just not passionate, like you might hope to find with a CD with Cuba in its name. Definitely background music but lovely background music just the same! Available on Amazon
In the DVD Player
Trainspotting
This is an oldie, but I missed it when it first came out. After being inspired by Ewan McGregor’s travels in Long Way Down, I went back and watched this great movie. The story of heroin addicts in Scotland, it’s honest, gross, sad and funny. I’m surprised that I never watched this when it was first released but I may not have been ready for the brutal honesty it depicts. Well worth a watch. Available on Amazon

PacSafe VentureSafe 20L
With slashproof panels and slashproof straps, the VentureSafe 20L is a great daybag for gals and guys. At first glance I thought this bag would be too big for my daily travel needs but it actually appears bulkier than it is due to the heavy duty straps and back padding. Read more…

World Eats
Mycha’s got an excellent recipe this month for Calamarata Pasta with Blue Cheese. This calls for a unique noodle and features sun-dried tomatoes and a cheese you might not be used to pairing with pasta – both add a nice zing. Top it with fresh parsley and you’re halfway to Italy.
For more ethnic eats, see Myscha’s blog, World Eats and Readers’ Treats.
