Angkor Wat - What the Guide Books Don’t Tell You
(page 3 of 3)
Hiking up four floors when already hot, sweaty and tired is no fun! Most of the larger new hotels are out of the center, often WAY out from everything, so you are a captive audience for dining. A few hotels have a pool, which would be wonderful after a sweaty day sightseeing. Actual hotel recommendations, well, places which I would ask for further information are:
Pansea Hotel $200 - $350
Angkor Village Hotel $60 - $125
Ta Prohm $60 - $100
Neak Pean Hotel $39 - $120
Borann, l’Auberge des Temples $36 - $48
Auberge Mont Royal d’Ankor $25 - $55
La Noria $31 - $42
One movie which came out in 2001 which I did not go to see was “Lara Croft - Tomb Raider” starring Angeline Jolie. Quite a lot of it was filmed at Angkor Wat, and the film crew was there on location for weeks. Their “hangout” was the “Red Piano” restaurant, which is right in the heart of downtown, a lovely place with good, well priced food which I highly recommend.
I can recommend most highly Ponheary Ly as a guide to the site. She is a guide’s guide, and is often booked up. Advance booking is essential and you can email her at ponheary@yahoo.com. She is also a philanthropist and has a foundation to raise money to buy children their mandatory school uniforms which cost about $12 per child/year. No uniform - no school. Ponheary also has modest accommodations for travelers.
So, that is my report on “all you need to know and didn’t know who to ask about a visit to Angkor Wat”
