Mountainsmith Carbonlite Pro
I became a big advocate of hiking poles during my trek through Eastern Bhutan. See, I used to think that I didn’t need them because my balance was fine (which it is). But what I discovered was that hiking at altitude, in (sometimes) inclement weather, for long stretches of time, can be tiring!
And though I could have made this 6-day trek without the use of a pole or two, having at least one saved just enough energy that I could enjoy the scenery and push on through even the longest of days.
Whether you’re traveling or hiking closer to home, the adjustable Mountainsmith Carbonlite Pro poles might be just the ticket. They weigh just over a pound and pack down to just 27 inches. I love their light weight as well as the ease of use when adjusting the size. The handles and straps are quite comfortable, too.
While they are just a tad too long for a carry-on bag (and TSA rules are ambiguous as to whether you can actually take them on board a flight in your carry-on anyway), tucking them away into a checked bag and having them for that next short hike or long trek during your travels might be a creature comfort that you’ll become used to!
Available on the Mountainsmith site for under $70
