It’s a pity. I can see Mt. Rainier from my living room window (well when it’s not socked in by clouds). But I don’t get out hiking on the mountain nearly as much as I should. Actually, it’s so rare I’m embarrassed to even say.
But I do get out now and again on shorter weekend getaways AND must also carry my own sleeping bag when I trek in Bhutan.
The High Peak Mt. Rainier Sleeping Bag is an excellent affordable choice for cool weather camping. This mummy bag is windproof AND waterproof – a big deal in the Pacific Northwest where, for much of the year, you can count on some moisture. The bag has taped seams to keep the wetness out yet is breathable so it doesn’t hold in your body moisture.
The shell is made with a Ripstop Nylon Taffeta (apparently quite instrumental in keeping you warm) and is then insulated with Thermolite Quallo, providing warmth on those cold overnights.
I’m 5″2′ and Jon is 6 foot. We’ve both tested this seven foot-long bag out and find that there’s plenty of room, lengthwise, but agree that due to its mummy design, it’s (understandably) snug width-wise.
More than the length, however, Jon loves the fact that two of these can be zipped together so if we head to the mountains on a motorcycle weekend, we’ll be plenty cozy :-).
This bag comes in 3 versions with ratings at 0, 20 and minus 20 degrees. (Oh lordy lord. I shudder to think that I’m going to need the minus 20 when I do the Snowman Trek in Bhutan next year.)
Depending on the version, the bag weighs anywhere from 3.5 to nearly 6 pounds (the lower rating weighing the most).
What I Love
- The bag is super slim and snuggly
- Low price ($108 – $140) compared to similar products
Not So Much
- I would love for this to pack down just a tad smaller so that it’s easier to carry
- I’m waiting for a battery powered electric blanket to warm up the interior before I hop in 🙂
The High Peak Mt. Rainier Sleeping Bags are available on Amazon starting at $108.
Travel Well,
Beth
