Vietnam Airlines to Fly Direct - LA to HCMC

August 20th, 2007

For those of us who make it a habit of going to Vietnam at any chance we get, this is great news. Vietnam Airlines is seeking permission to fly direct from LA to Ho Chi Minh City (which most of still call Saigon) beginning late October.

Currently, Vietnam Airlines has only been able to provide service through codesharing with American Airlines.

The airline also hopes to add service to Seattle, San Francisco, New York and Dallas/Fort Worth. They also hope to include flights into Hanoi.

The flying time IS a killer, about 17 hours from the U.S. to Vietnam but you do end up saving some time by not having a layover.

After seven trips there myself, I highly recommend Vietnam as a destination.

I’ve just returned from my sixth trip to Vietnam…what a wonderful country..and friendly people.

On the first trip I flew from Honolulu to LA to connect with Cathay Pacific to Vietnam. That adds another 10+ hours to the round trip. Since then I’ve flown JAL via Tokyo or Osaka. Returning yesterday I had a 12 hour layover at Narita. I think next year I’ll opt in to the HNL/LAX/SGN/LAX/HNL. I have family in southern California so could easily make it a dual purpose trip.
