I’m usually ready for a staycation around this time of year. I’m yearning to unplug but not go too far away from home. I want someplace where I can relax but I don’t want to get stressed about all the packing that comes with a getaway that’s longer than a weekend or far from home. And I like to do it before the holiday season sets in, which for me is around mid-November.
If I’m going to stay in a hotel in Seattle, I like to find an interesting hotel, something cool, weird, or funky. So… in researching for this year’s getaway, here’s what I found in terms of unique Seattle hotels.
Hotel Max – One of the most artistic-leaning hotels in Seattle, Hotel Max has unique artwork in every room and photography from local artists on every floor. It even has an entire floor dedicated to Sub Pop Records (our treasured indie label).
Every room is different and they range from the Solo (small) to Limited Edition King (large).
Special amenities include the ability to borrow a preloaded iPod and have the room equipped with pet beds, bowls and treats and for your dog.
Typical midweek rate – $125/night.
Ace Hotel – A great bargain hotel, the Ace is more like an upscale hostel than a typical boutique hotel. It’s located in Belltown, one of the hippest and most active areas of the city that’s jam-packed with bars and restaurants.
The rooms are quintessential downtown Seattle with brick walls. Standard rooms have shared bathrooms while Deluxe rooms have private bathrooms. After a good night’s sleep, you can duck downstairs for a DIY breakfast of waffles and Stumptown coffee in the shared kitchen and dining area.
Typical midweek rate – $103/night.
Hotel Andra – Hotel Andra draws upon Seattle’s heritage with rooms featuring Scandinavian decor and artwork from local artists. Don’t tell, but whether I’m staying there or not, I love to to just sit in the lobby next to the stone fireplace. Doors in the lobby open to the bar at Tom Douglas’ restaurant, Lola.
Typical midweek rate – $127/night.
Pensione Nichols – Seattle doesn’t have quite the number of Bed & Breakfasts as you might imagine for a large city but here is one in downtown Seattle to check out. Pensione Nichols is on the second and third floors of a 100+ year-old building. It features English antiques and a King Charles spaniel that may greet you upon arrival.
Typical midweek rate – $130/night.
Hotel 1000 – Hotel 1000 is likely the most high-tech hotel in Seattle. Some of the features include: infrared scanners so that hotel staff can determine whether a room is occupied; personalization of the room through temperature control, artwork and music selections; and de-aerated water filler in the bath tub which provides a steady stream of water and eliminates splashing. Also? They’ve got a virtual golf room. I’m not a big golfer myself, but I did have fun trying this out.
Rooms feature Thai bed linens, pedestal bathtubs (with an electronic privacy shade in the bathroom) and Keurig single cup coffee brewers.
Typical midweek rate – $359/night.
