The Travel Gene Factor

July 24th, 2007

A few weeks ago, Jon and I had dinner with a friend who is hopping on his bicycle and peddling south. WAY SOUTH. Over the next three years, he figures he’ll eventually make his way to South America.

After we left Dave (and his mohawk – which surely won’t fit under his helmet), Jon mentioned that he’s missing the fearless gene that Dave and I have in which we can pick up and just go and know that everything will work out OK. Jon enjoys traveling, he just wouldn’t think of planning such a great adventure on his own.

The very next day, I had lunch with Rita Golden Gelman, author of Tales of a Female Nomad. During our lively conversation, Rita mentioned that she was born without the Fear Gene that most people have that would prevent them from taking on extraordinary journeys.

It’s like trying to determine whether the glass is half full or half empty. Do you have the Adventure Gene that enables you to travel or are you missing the Fear Gene that enables you to travel?

Either way, we should all tap into our genes and adventure onward.

Happy Travels!
