Photo of the Day: Kathmandu Stupa

September 19th, 2007

Stupas, like this one in Kathmandu, can be found throughout Asia and increasingly in other parts of the world. A symbol of Buddhism, stupas represent an enlightened mind.

Stupa in Kathmandu

The base of a stupa varies, generally depending on where it has been constructed and the origin of the religion (Buddhism from Tibet, Nepal, India, Burma, etc.). At one time ascetics were buried in the mound, or base of the stupa, with the spire reaching into the sky.

The large eyes on each side of the stupa represent God’s ability to see all. The symbolic number “1″ between the eyes represents the one path to enlightenment.

Happy (and enlightened) Travels!
