Photo of the Day: Bhutan Prayer Flags

 Prayer Flags

This morning, I finished reading Buttertea at Sunrise: A Year in the Bhutan Himalaya by Britta Das. It’s the sweet story of a Canadian woman who goes to Bhutan to work as a physiotherapist. Of course she falls in love (with an Indian doctor) and, well, I won’t spoil the story for you.

So, today, my own heart feels full as I will be going back to Bhutan next April. And having just finished this book, I’m beside myself with excitement today. To keep the feeling, I’m sharing the above photo that I took in Bhutan earlier this year. Tonight I’ll cook Bhutanese red rice and create a meal straight out of the Himalayas (lentils, momo’s or some other scrumptious meal).

If you have the slightest interest at all in learning more about Bhutan, here are a few things to check out:

I’m jealous you get to go back to Bhutan. I have never been but it seems one of the most wonderful places from the photos. I hear it is expensive with the visa though….I’ll have to save for it!

@ Nomadic Matt – the visa isn’t expensive (it’s only $10) but the government requires visitors to pay a daily tariff. It’s currently $200/day but that’s going up to $250 in 2009. Note that the tariff covers all expenses other than souvenirs and drinks. Expensive? Yes. But absolutely priceless.
