Given the recent events in Bangkok, I thought today’s Photo Friday (see DeliciousBaby for more great photos) would be a good time to show the beautiful side of this vibrant city.

I was there in April on my way to Bhutan and will be returning again in April of 2009. After having heard from a friend who got stuck there on his way to Burma, I wrote about the situation on my Post Intelligencer blog. I hope that I don’t return to a very different city. For now, the biggest change is that hotel vacancy rates are in the teens and people are being laid off at alarming rates.

The above photo is of strings of flowers used as offerings at one of the many Buddhist altars set up around the city. This is a typical scene from a culture that openly prays at places of worship set up on sidewalks on nearly every block.
