Marriott Waffles on Women-Only Floor

July 30th, 2007

The new Marriott Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan, due to open in September, was initially supposed to include a women-only floor. The 19th floor of this 23-floor hotel was to have amenities geared towards women including chenille throw blankets, ionic hair dryers and jewelry holders.

The floor was to provide businesswomen with an added sense of security.

Shortly after announcing this new women-only floor, the hotel received a “tremendous response” from customers. As a result, they decided not to move forward with this exclusive floor.

I have mixed feelings about this whole thing.

To have a floor dedicated to women sounds like fun. I imagine special pink bathrobes in the rooms, perfume samples and drink specials delivered to your room. A lounge where women could socialize would also be great.

But, to add a floor for security reasons? Does that mean the other floors are NOT secure? Are women that worried about their safety that they have to be sequestered to their own floor?

And who complained so much that Marriott reversed its decision?

Ah, so many questions…

Happy Travels!
