Healthcare Arrives in Remote Nepali Village

November 29th, 2006

Villagers in Katunje, Nepal, were visited by 19 Nepali medical and dental professionals and seven volunteers from the United States and Canada for a three day health camp in October. The event was organized by the Ecological Protection Forum based in Kathmandu.

Residents in this remote village are without regular medical services and nearly 2000 patients arrived for treatment and medications, far exceeding the expected 1500.

Services included; gynecological care, general medical care (check-ups, free medicine and counseling) and a dental clinic. During the three day health camp, there was also a children’s activity area in which the kids were taught basic health principles in an entertaining way.

In addition to the on-site care given, nine women were nominated by local politicians to receive special training in order to dispense medications in their villages to help families with basic health needs. This is seen as a sustainable way to continue health care practices in these communities.

Next year’s program is expected to take place during the first week in November in another region of Nepal. While gynecology will be a high priority for the program, volunteers are needed from any sector of medicine, dentistry and optometry.
