Female hikers murdered

July 16th, 2006

We are lulled into a false sense of security by believing that cities are dangerous and that we can find respite in nature and that dense populations are what cause high anxiety environments forcing individuals into aggressive behavior. And, we think that by buddying up and hiking with another person, we are safer than if we were alone.

Two women were shot to death on a popular hiking trail in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington State this past week. Mother and daughter, Mary Cooper and Susanna Stodden, were avid hikers who often enjoyed this trail. The killer has not been found and no motive is known.

While I want to believe that this incident was so extraordinary that it couldn’t possibly happen again, reality is that it could easily be repeated, particularly since the killer has not been found.

What would I do? Well, stay out of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest for now. And I would avoid hiking solo or in very small groups anywhere in the area for the time being.

Unfortunately, this tragic incident underscores the need to never let down your guard, which is part of the reason we venture into the woods and mountains in the first place - to unplug and relax.

Regardless of your destination, carry pepperspray or a knife if you’re traveling domestically and prepare yourself emotionally and physically by taking a self defense course.

Safe Travels!
