Drive to Wangdue - Bhutan

Wangdue Dzong near Trongsa
After departing Punakha, our crew of 15 (including driver and guide) continued heading east, over Pela La Pass and on to Wangdue and ultimately Trongsa, a spectacular and dramatic area surrounded by greenery.
The drive was long, more than five hours, and cuts through the Black Mountains. This road, built about 30 years ago, effectively opened central Bhutan up to the outside world.
However, it’s as if time has stood still.
A small market in central Wangdue is surrounded by a few shops, hotels for locals and a couple of restaurants.

During the drive, we stopped to visit a location where the film, Travelers and Magicians, was filmed. (More later on this movie as we had lunch with the film’s star later in our trip!) The cast and crew had painted a Buddha and prayer on the cliff walls next to the road after they had a spate of bad long while filming.
