Signing books at 2008 New York Times Travel Show

Quick calendar update here.

I’ll be speaking in a couple of weeks at the New York Times Travel Show at the Jacob Javits Center. I’ll be part of a panel on Sunday, February 8th on how to make your WILD travel dreams a reality. My topic is India and others will be talking about Cambodia, Iceland and Costa Rica. These destinations – wild? Well, I don’t know ’bout that, but wherever you go, you can make it wild.

The speaker lineup throughout the weekend is awesome. Be sure to see Andrew Zimmern from the Food Network who’ll eat just about anything from any market in the world. And, speaking of food, New York Times columnist, Mark Bittman, will be speaking about the topic and the impact of your food choices on the planet. I’ve heard him on several radio interviews and he’s quite a New Yorker, in a good way, of course. He’s sure to entertain…

Pauline and Arthur Frommer (yes he’s still kicking) will be speaking about travel in troubled times and Patricia Shultz will be showing off some slides about the 1,000 places that should be on your bucket list.

Shortly after returning from NYC, I’ll be headed to the Bay Area where I’ll be conducting travel workshops (for men AND women) at three REI’s. If you’re in the ‘hood, stop in on either February 17th, 18th or 19th to one of these FREE two-hour events.

Stay posted as I may be in DC for the Adventures in Travel Expo on February 21st.

Wherever you are, stop on in and let me know you’re a Wanderluster!

Travel Well!

Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of being part of an evening of Wine, Women and Wandering which was hosted at the Eileen Fisher clothing store in downtown Seattle.

The idea behind the evening was to encourage other women to pursue their dreams, be it as a businesswoman or adventurer. It was organized by Tracy at Epiphany Research, and included libations from Dama Wines in Walla Walla and Dry Soda of Seattle. Chris MacKay from Crooked Trails gave a wonderful slide show of the tours that they lead and I had the honor of speaking about my experiences as a traveler, writer and entrepreneur.

The Eileen Fisher store was chosen because of Eileen’s personal story as an entrepreneur. She started her business with a few hundred dollars in her bank account and some samples of clothes that she was passionate about selling. She has turned that into 35 stores across the U.S. The women who work at the Eileen Fisher store in downtown Seattle are passionate about what they do and love their jobs so much that most of them have been there for a half dozen years or more.

I was also really inspired with Chris’ talk about Crooked Trails. This 10-year-old non-profit tour company is committed to improving the cultural, economical and ecological conditions of the communities they visit. In her talk, Chris said, “We ask that our participants not buy bottled water and instead require that they filter their own.” She notes that there are too many plastic water bottles left behind by other travelers at many destinations and she doesn’t want Crooked Trails participating in creating more trash.

Even though it was held on presidential debate night, we had a crowd of probably 60 something women, from those in their 20’s through those in their 70’s. I’m assuming they all knew already who they were going to vote for

Thank you to all those women who came to the event and peppered us all with such great questions about travel (and wine).

Travel Well!

Last week I wrote about feeling very fortunate to be surrounded by some amazing travel angels.

This week, it’s been more of the same.

On Sunday, I moderated a panel of women travelers for the Adventures in Travel Expo at the Seattle Convention Center. Joining me were Pam Mandel who has a personal blog at Nerds Eye View, Mary Jo Manzanares who is the Travel & Culture Channel Editor at b5Media and blogs at Fly Away Cafe, the Travel Product Guide and The Seattle Traveler and Chris MacKay from the responsible tour company, Crooked Trails.

These experienced WanderGals shared their inside tips on travel including their favorite travel gadgets, ideas for having an eco-friendly journey and ways to stay safe as a woman traveler. There were lots of questions from the audience, reinforcing the fact that we gals are hungry for information about travel! Go Girls!

Last night I spoke at Wide World Books & Maps in Wallingford about India. Despite the fact that I almost passed out because of the heat (seriously), I had a large crowd of very interested women (and a few men, too), who have either traveled to India or are heading there shortly. I’m hoping that I inspired them and helped prepare them for their journey! I know I can’t wait to get back there myself (pssst – I’m working on an itinerary to lead a group of women there next fall. I don’t have details yet but let me know if you are interested and I’ll keep you posted as the info unfolds.)

Other events on my speaking calendar include:

October 15th – I’ll be speaking about travel for women at a (relatively) private event at Eileen Fisher in downtown Seattle. I can get you on the list if you’re interested…

October 30th – Issaquah REI is hosting me for an evening of talk about travel for women as part of a larger women’s travel series they’re hosting.

December 3rd – I’m teaching a workshop at Bellevue Community College.

Hope to see all you Wanderlusters soon!
