Baby You Can Drive My Car

February 5th, 2007

Travel in India is surely all about the transportation. It’s been the getting from one place to the next, be it city to city or within a city or village, that often colors my experience of a given destination.

My most pleasantly memorable times have been when we’ve had a good …

Streets of Udaipur

February 2nd, 2007

Udaipur, in the state of Rajasthan, has undoubtedly been the highlight of this trip.

Peaceful, serene and romantic are descriptions that easily come to mind.

On our last morning there, we walked the streets and got away from the tourist areas to find street vendors, cafes and restaurants geared more towards the …

OK, You Win

January 30th, 2007

It wasn’t my intention to “win”. Plus, I don’t believe that any traveler in India can really “win”. The locals will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have one up on you. They know the language. They know what price to pay. And they have the time to bargain.

None the less, our rickshaw …

Tis the Season…

January 28th, 2007

… to get married.

This is THE auspicious week for any available male or female to get married in India. The planets are aligned just right. As a result, we’ve been able to view a wedding every night (and day) for nearly a week now.

It started in Udaipur when we were …

Delicate Balance

January 26th, 2007

It’s hot in much of India. In order to stay feeling my best, I’ve found that I need to stay hydrated. A deliciously cold lemon soda (fresh squeezed lemon juice with a bottle of soda water on the side) works well in addition to the bottles of cold water I …

Women at Work

January 22nd, 2007

Despite the fact that road construction in India can often look like your typical Department of Transportation work day in the United States where you have ten people standing around trying to solve one small problem, the Indian people are very hard working. And none more so than the women….

Bangalore to Hampi

January 19th, 2007

After leaving Bangalore, we took an overnight train to Hampi. Fortunately, we got a full night’s rest in an air conditioned sleeper train that we had all to ourselves and we arrived on the last day of a two day festival.

Hampi is a small village located about halfway between Bangalore …

15 Minutes of Fame

January 17th, 2007

Unlike the large city of Bangalore, where the locals have more exposure to westerners on a regular basis, historic Mysore attracts Indian tourists from many rural areas - regions where it’s likely they’ve never seen a westerner and certainly not a blonde.

At the Royal Palace, I received far more attention …

Fabindia

January 12th, 2007

I arrived in India with few clothes. Actually, the least amount of clothes I’ve ever traveled with. Bhaswati asked, WHY? I’m not quite sure that I have a great answer for that except that it was a great way to travel light and it sounded like a thrill to have …
