Breasts on a Plane

by Beth (November 20th, 2006)

Last month, a Santa Fe woman was asked to leave a flight on Freedom (how ironic) Airlines on a trip from Burlington, VT to New York after she declined to cover her baby with a blanket while she was breastfeeding.

Her breast was not in view and she was in the second to last row, seated at the window with her husband sitting between her and the aisle. A flight attendant insisted that she either cover up with a blanket or get off the flight. The woman, Emily Gillette, explained that she had every right to be there as breastfeeding is protected under state law but was kicked off the plane none-the-less.

Gillette recently filed a complaint against Delta Airlines and Freedom (which was operating the flight on behalf of Delta) with the Vermont Human Rights Commission.

In the meantime, the flight attendant who actually kicked Gillette off of the flight has been disciplined by the airline, though the details of that discipline have not been released.

While Delta did pay for a hotel room and got Gillette and her family on another airline the next day, she was humiliated by the event when she was initially asked to leave the plane. She left without incidence because she didn’t want to cause a scene.

Response to the incidence on MSNBC’s message board has been outrage against Delta Airlines and the inability for a woman to breastfeed her child in public.
