The Ortlieb Velocity cycling backpack is perfect for rainy city rides. I’ve used this bright yellow, fully waterproof, rugged and ready bag for the last three months and couldn’t be happier. It’s large, but not too large, cycling oriented, but also perfect for non-cycling use, and made to be used and abused! Read on to see if it’s the bag for you.
Pros:
1. High Visibility: This neon yellow pack (also available in sleek black or cyber silver) is made to be seen. I love the happy color, the no-nonsense car protection, and the talking point. When co-workers, passersby, or fellow elevator riders see my pack, they immediately know I ride. And then we chat about the loveliness of two wheeled transport.
2. Comfy Padding: I have been gifted with a spine that sticks out, thus padding is extremely important. This bag’s squishy shoulder straps, waist belt, and spine protection are delightful.
3. Pocket: This is awesome! Unlike most waterproof backpacks, which are just tubes, this pack has a pocket. The zipper pocket is just large enough for my cellphone, wallet, and random scraps of paper that I scribble like a crazy person on and save. At the front of the zippered part are three more pockets (non zippered), one large one that is the perfect size for my small moleskin (that holds more of my crazy scribbles) and two pen pockets — ideal for a writer like me.
4. Waterproof: This is obvious, but this waterproof pack is waterproof! This is great for the wet springs, damp falls, and drizzly winters of Seattle.
Cons:
1. Heat: This bag is not terribly wonderful for hot weather riding. The waterproof bag is decidedly not breathable, nor wicking, and any and all sweat will stick right where you don’t want it: on your back.
2. Easy Fraying: The fabric around the opening of the bag is perfectly positioned for wear and tear. It’s a silly thing, but I was disappointed that not two rides in, the velcro strap had already caused this strip of fabric to look old and worn.
