Last week I flew out to Outdoor Retailer, the largest outdoor gear manufacturer’s trade show in the country. It was a complete blast, and I have to offer up the five things I’m most excited about this season!
1. Iceshoot
This might seem silly, but when you are standing in a puddle in someone else’s home without any water in your hydration pack, you’ll think twice. This item, created in the last 30 days and introduced for the first time last week, is simplicity that works — just place one end in your hydration bladder and the other against the water dispenser, and enjoy fuss-free filling!
2. Hammocks
Hammocks have taken over this season. From Grand Trunk to ENO, companies are realizing that people love sleeping in trees. With new features — like a rain fly/bug net/bag holder — becoming readily available, hammocks are becoming increasingly viable to take along while bike packing. Stay tuned for my hammock reviews in the future!
3. Hidden Reflective
Cycling companies are becoming increasingly interested in making their items look as good as they work. I’m loving this Thule pannier with a striking reflective pattern — only visible when the flash is on. By integrating smart, yet still stunning, features cycling companies are bringing the sport into a lifestyle.
4. Cycling Dresses
Finally! Companies are realizing two things: (a) women cycle and (b) we like to look good. I’m falling in love with the many options on the market — some even featuring pockets in the back, just like a jersey. I’m hoping to see some natural fiber dresses with cycling features (perhaps some reflective detailing?) come on the market soon.
5. Commuting Features
As more and more cyclists hit the road every morning on their way to work, companies are catching up. Take this Timbuk2 bag, for example. The included hanger and ultralight material make this perfect for commuters who catch a quick shower after their ride in.
I am thrilled to see the great strides taken in the cycling world — and can’t wait to share some of my reviews with you!
Just keep spinning. –Arielle
