Happy National Rum Day, United States!
One of my favorite things about the new AirTran flight direct from Austin, Texas to Cancun, Mexico is that when I come home (from Isla Mujeres) I can now bring back a bottle of Cuban rum!
I kept waiting for it to be taken away from me. It has made my summer, which has been a rough one (more on that later), a little more manageable.
If you follow this blog, you know how I love my Cuban rum mojitos when visiting Isla Mujeres.
Every mojito I’ve had in my life pales in comparison to one made with Cuban rum.
It’s unfortunate residents of the United States can’t enjoy the beauty of Cuba. I really want to visit someday.
Havana, Cuba by Michelle Holmes
In the 1990s I had a couple of friends who flew to Mexico and after some time in Mexico, went on to Cuba. This is illegal and you will face charges when returning to the United States if caught entering Cuba through a third country. Maybe it wasn’t as strict back in the 90s? Or they just didn’t get caught.
There seems to be a way to travel there legally if you are covering a story for a news outlet, or are able to convince the government your project falls under “journalistic activities”.
For now, I will enjoy delicious Cuban rum mojitos in the comfort of my own home. Cheers!
Have you been to Cuba? Am I romanticizing it because of the vintage cars, beautiful colors, and amazing food? Will citizens of the United States ever be free to travel to Cuba?
May your journey be your muse,
Rachel

UPDATE: If you are an American, DO NOT purchase Cuban rum at Duty Free, even though they will tell you it is fine. In 2013 the people working the alcohol counter in Duty Free assured us this was completely legal because we were on a direct flight. Sadly, it doesn’t matter. It’s still Cuban. We were just lucky in 2013. When we returned to Austin this week (February 2015) from our most recent trip to Isla Mujeres with our Cuban rum (purchased in Duty Free at the Cancun airport) we were escorted to a private room by Homeland Security.
