Clark’s Oyster Bar
Each year Austin is flooded in mid-March with people from all over the world attending the SXSW (South by Southwest) Festival. I am putting together a series for attendees that can be utilized by travelers all year!
Austin is not only the fastest growing city in America, it is also quickly becoming a foodie mecca. As a 30-year local, I have watched all of this growth unfold. The following list features my favorite restaurants in town at this moment. Many have been on my list for years.
Of course when you add alcohol, things can get really pricey. Fortunately for SXSW attendees, there are plenty of free parties with free booze all over town.

Uchi: You may have heard of James Beard award winner Tyson Cole. For ten years now he’s been serving up the most unique and delightful sushi in the Southwest. My favorite Uni preparation in Texas. Reservations recommended.
Uchiko: Uchi’s sister restaurant pushes the creative envelope even further featuring nigiri pieces you wouldn’t dare put soy sauce on. There is just no reason to, as each piece has a special garnish, creating the perfect bite. If you watched Top Chef Texas last year, you may remember Paul Qui – he used to be the Chef de Cuisine here. Reservations recommended.
Clark’s: Austin’s newest oyster bar also features an extensive list of caviar and lengthy catch of the day menu. The Cioppino is the best I’ve had. Reservations recommended.

Kome: A casual sushi dining experience without any loss in the quality of fish. Very popular at lunch for their ramen dishes. Get the Tsukiji nigiri set at dinner. Their take on fish and chips is a personal favorite.
Owner Take Asazu (in the white bandana)
Pearla’s: Big brother to Clark’s (above), Pearla’s also features a wonderful selection of oysters, my favorite pozole in town, and a fantastic weekend brunch.
Justine’s: This Austin-Parisian outpost has a kitchen that stays open well past midnight, vintage vinyl spinning from the behind the bar, and the most unique French food experience in Texas.
$$
Takoba: This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. I’m addicted to the green sauce (so spicy!) and their drink list pleases everyone I take there. My brunch favorite is the Huevos Divorciados plate. Do it!
Hillside Farmacy: This can actually jump up into the $$$ range if you dive into oysters, so be careful. Feel free to dive in though, you won’t be disappointed! I like the Egg in a Bowl dish. Their salvaged decor is beautiful and the relaxed French Bistro vibe is a nice change of pace.
My price ranges are just a suggestion; you can always spend less and it’s easy to spend more.
This list just scratches the surface, but I personally recommend each one. Plus, all of these restaurants are local to Austin!
