Tartufo – Italian Dessert

It’s hard for me to get my fill of Italian food when I head “back east” to the New York/New Jersey area. Last weekend, when I was there for the New York Times Travel Show, I filled up on pizza, eggplant parmigiana and a dessert or two (or three!).

During a big dinner out, one of my friends ordered tartufo. I had never heard of this before but I have to admit that it looked pretty darn good.

Tartufo is ice cream covered in a chocolate shell. In this case both chocolate and vanilla ice cream were used and the center sported a cherry. It was then cut open and topped with chocolate sauce and a dollop of whipped cream. Sugar bliss, don’tcha think?

I know. It looks gross – doesn’t it?

But oh-my, how I love my eggplant parmigiana. Well, I usually love it if it’s from New Jersey, like this one.

Eggplant Parmigiana a la Boise

Yes, Idaho is an odd place to find an eggplant parmigiana sandwich. But find one I did when I spoke at Idaho Camera a few weeks ago. And it was pretty darn good, too!

The location was Casanova’s on Vista Ave in Boise. After my speaking gig, I took the suggestion of Beth at Treasure Valley Fudge (in Boise) and made my way to this little restaurant. Though Beth suggested pizza, I was really hankering for eggplant.

It was worth it!
