For New Year’s Eve this year, we did something a little different. Rather than going to our old standby, we tried a new Seattle restaurant that we had heard rave reviews about. Japonessa.

Strange name. Especially when you consider that it’s pronounced “ya-po-ness-a.” As if it’s Spanish.

Actually, Japonessa serves up lots of Japanese-style tapas, so it makes perfect sense that they are drawing upon a Spanish name.

Out for a New Year’s celebration, you’d expect to drop well over $100 for 2 people, right? While I’m sure that many other couples might have, but we squeaked in under $60 and had more than our fill with the above sushi roll, a couple of bowls of miso soup, tempura (below) and a raw sushi dish that Jon gobbled up. Oh, and a couple of celebratory drinks, too.

The food was actually so good that we stopped in there again a week later after we saw the Picasso exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum (directly across the street). That second night, we then popped over to the Four Seasons for a dessert of hot chocolate and creme brulee.

We’re starting the year off fat right, aren’t we???!!

Life’s Short, Eat Well!

When I was in Boulder last fall, my friend, Lisa, took me to The Mediterranean Restaurant. Not only is this popular joint beautifully decorated, they have a killer happy hour.

Above is a plate of Gambas – shrimp with garlic chips, lime and olive oil (happy hour cost, just $3.25!). We ate plenty of food and with 2 drinks (one alcoholic, one not), it was less than $20 for 2 people. Almost worth the plane flight to Colorado

Not my cup of tea, but this Chicken Pot Pie DID look good.

This veggie feta spinach pie was right up my alley.

The best! Whoopie Pies (or as some called them, Moon Pies).

The ever popular Zweibelkuchen (I’m sure it was good but it had bacon so I avoided it).

Any Irish out there? Here’s Steak and Guiness Pie.
