This weekend I went wine tasting in the beautiful Sonoma County Wine Country. One thing I’ve always noticed is how few wineries offer comparative wine tasting; that is trying the same varietal from different vintages, or maybe different vineyards, side by side.
There are pros and cons to this approach of course, from a winery’s point of view, but as a consumer it makes the tasting that much more interesting. If you’re unfamiliar with a winery or a particular varietal, it’s one of the best ways to get acquainted.
Especially in the case of something like Rose wine, pictured above, it’s always fascinating to taste the differences. The wines above were from two different wineries so we really got a sense of how much variation there is in the winemaking technique for Rose. And just look at that difference in color!
I’m reminded of Julia Roberts great line in Steel Magnolias in response to Sally Fields saying her wedding colors were “pink and pink.” Julia answers back in her lovely natural Southern drawl “My colors are blush and bashful, two distinct shades of pink, one much deeper than the other.” I’d say that’s true of the pictured wines…but which is which?
Have you had an exceptional comparative tasting experience at a winery before? What made it stand out for you?
