To tell the truth, I was a little surprised when I opened the box containing new socks from Smartwool‘s ‘spring line.’ Little did I know, they’d soon be discovered as the most comfortable sock to wear on a plane ride and the key to a pleasant flight. Envisioning dreary and dull looking hiking socks that would keep my feet warm, healthy and dry, I let the box languish unopened in a corner until I was going somewhere they’d come in handy. As an ex ski-racer, I’ve long been familiar with the high quality of Smartwool‘s products. I thought I knew what I was talking about.
No question that Smartwool makes very good socks, that are efficient and excellent technically, but who wants to wear ski socks to school?
Wrong again, me! The box was actually filled with an overwhelming number of pink socks. That’s my favorite color, as you might recall. There were other colors too, things I did not expect from Smartwool. Ankle socks, thin socks, pretty designs. It actually resembled my sock drawer far more than the collection I had invisioned.
Recently, I took a few pretty pairs on a few cross-country jaunts, to Boston and New Orleans. While I got lucky and both cities were far to warm for shoes that required socks, the Smartwools made for an exceedingly comfortable couple of plane rides. Being uncomfortable on a plane ride sucks, and I’ve spent more than one thinking about sweaty or smelly feet–either my own or my neighbors’. Sporting the Smartwools solved any issues on my end.
Now I just have to hope my future seatmates read this article. My feet felt fresh and happy through out the journeys. In fact, I think my pleased paws put me in a far better mood overall as I traveled, keeping me from getting a case of the grumps. With their affordable and varied collection, Smartwool has found a way to open itself to a much wider audience. I for one support this–and am pushing to make sure all of my upcoming flight-mates have a pair on their feet too.
