Artist Luke Jerram installed donated pianos in public places in cities around the world to encourage people to interact. Musicians of all sorts came out of the woodwork, creating spontaneous music and unexpected joy. Watch what happened in London, then get out there and create something of your own!

Fans of vicarious travel will soon have a new show to tune in: Music Voyager. The program begins broadcasting this month on PBS, Nat Geo Music & Adventure, and other television outlets. Host Jacob Edgar (head of indie label Cumbancha and music researcher for the Putumayo World Music label) travels the globe in search of great music and adventure. The first three episodes find him in India; the second three trek through Jamaica. Local musicians guide him in each location, and viewers get a backstage pass to festivals, recording studios, and little-known venues. Enjoy the journey!

Stand By Me

A lot of TravelTracks readers have probably already seen this video, but it doesn’t seem right to let it go by without a mention. It’s a version of “Stand By Me” that’s different from any that you’ve heard before. Filmmaker Mark Johnson traveled around the world and asked local street musicians to perform the song. Each performer was able to hear what had come before him or her and build on it. The moving result is the very essence of world music.
