I’ve just returned from a magical two weeks in Nicaragua, and the beautiful island of Ometepe is where I spent the majority of my time. Though only about 100 square miles in size, it is home to two volcanoes which dominate the tropical landscape.
Volcan Maderas is an extinct volcano blanketed with tropical cloud forest.
Volcan Concepcion, pictured here, is an active volcano, emitting a steady puff of steam and periodically burping up clouds of ash. Staying and working with the local people, I marveled at their gumption to live at the foot of this sleeping giant. In fact, the Ometepinos are so loyal to their island home that in 1957 when Concepcion started the rumblings of an eruption, the islanders defiantly refused the government’s order to evacuate. The island is such an oasis of beauty and tranquility, it is said they’d rather die here than live anywhere else!
