KEEN wants to send you to Africa!

Good, comfortable shoes are paramount to a pleasant experiences when you travel. Among my footwear artillery are a coveted pair of KEEN hiking boots, which are currently stationed on my front porch bearing a thick layer of volcanic ash from last weekend’s Mt. St. Helen’s climb. Love those shoes.

KEEN, a Portland, OR-based company, has long been on my radar for their revolutionary use of sustainable materials and hybrid technologies.

My love for them is growing in the wake of a new contest KEEN is running – one lucky winner will be sent to South Africa on a volunteer vacation with TEARS, an animal rescue society. Cool prize for a vacation with purpose, yeah!

Another cool aspect of this contest: after returning from their South African adventure, the winner is encouraged to share stories from the trip on KEEN’s HybridLife Community page, which they created in the hope that it will “connect people who are creating possibilities, engaging with the outdoors, and caring for the world around them.”

So, what do I have to do to enter? Sketch out a new concept shoe that filters water with every tread? Create a plant-based compund that masks foot order? NO! Just go to their site and fill out the short entry form. That’s it! Contest ends August 21st, so boogie on over there soon.

I myself recently bought a pair of KEEN mid-size hiking boots, and so far I just love them, too. So far they have taken me on several day hikes, in the Seattle area and in Alaska. I really bought them to take with me on an upcoming week-long trip, backpacking on part of the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier. I shall comment again when I return from this trip about how these boots were for an extended period of time.

OK, I’m back from my backpacking trip on part of the Wonderland Trail, and I wanted to comment on the KEEN boots that I wore. They were excellent! They took me almost 30 miles, and not a blister or sore feet at all! The one thing, though, is that I thought I bought the waterproof version, yet the boots did get wet. Maybe that is because it was raining here and there. But, they did dry out, too. Nonetheless, I shall continue to use these boots on future hiking and backpacking trips.
