As recycling programs are developing in more and more countries around the world, we’re seeing different takes on recycling iconography. Here are a few of the symbols used around the world to signal the soon-to-be universal concept of recycling.

The Mobius Loop

This internationally-recognized symbol indicates that the product which bears it may be recycled. The symbol hails from the “mobius strip” in mathematics.

The Enclosed Mobius Loop

If the mobius loop symbol is enclosed, as in the picture above, it has a slightly different meaning – “this product was made in an eco-friendly manner.”

The Green Dot

Most commonly found in European countries, an item bearing this trademarked symbol was made by a company that supports recycling.

The EU Ecolabel

The little flower signifies that the product has been made according to EU eco-standards – a voluntary scheme designed to encourage businesses to develop and market more eco-friendly products.

Japan’s Plastic Recycling

Trademarked by the Plastic Containers and Packaging Recycling Promotional Council,look for this symbol when recycling plastic in Japan.
