Now that I’m back in Seattle after 5 weeks away from the Pacific Northwest, it gives me the chance to do some exploring of my own back yard – which I love!
One of my favorite little getaways is in northern Washington. Specifically Bellingham and even more specifically, the Fairhaven neighborhood. From Seattle you can pop up to Bellingham on a day trip or stay for a couple of nights and make it a weekend getaway. As I got closer to the area on my most recent day trip there, I began regretting not having carved out more time to spend in this area of the state so close to British Columbia. I was actually admiring the scenery so much that I missed my exit!
Whether you travel for one day or more, it’s definitely worth the trip.
Fairhaven is an historic neighborhood on the south side of Bellingham that is home to Village Books, the Colophon Cafe, galleries and countless cafes, wine and gift shops. Many of the shops located on Village Books’ side of 11th street are all connected. So, you can pop into the bookstore and then make your way through kitchenware, gifts, clothes and a cafe without having to step outside (PERFECT for holiday shopping now that the weather has turned).
After you’ve had a black bean veggie burger (my favorite) at the Colophon, or a sandwich from Avenue Bread (oh my gosh, they have the BEST homemade breads and soups!), you can work off your meal on the wonderful walking path that meanders along the waterfront. Perfect for a long stroll or a jog. This time of year, bring a waterproof jacket, umbrella and hat. Still a lovely walk despite the weather.
If you’re not in a rush, stay overnight at the Fairhaven Village Inn, located on the Bellingham Bay just off of the main drag (11th Street).
To completely unplug, pop in to the Ayurvedic Health Center for a shirodhara (a steady stream of warm herbal oil poured on your forehead) or a dual abhyanga (two licensed massage therapists working to synchronize your nervous system… aaahhhh).
You can bet I’m planning a longer getaway there this winter. It ain’t Mexico, but a change of scenery, no matter where, is always lovely. See you in Fairhaven!
Travel Well!
