This being my first summer in a number of years, it was an adjustment to figure out what kind of sports and activities I wanted to get into. As with most die hard skiers and snowboarders, finding a fun fitness option to prep for the next season was on my mind. In previous posts, I have mentioned my focus on running to train for winter. It fits the bill in many ways, offering excellent health benefits, a rush of endorphins (ah, that post run feeling!) and a sense of freedom comparable to that of speeding downhill.
Mixing it up is what keeps it fun: pairing road running with trail running and hiking, looking out for new paths, loops and mountains to take on. Much the same as skiing, to get maximum enjoyment out of your experience sporting the right gear is key. I switch it up between a couple pairs of running shoes and my new Lowa Ferrox GTX Lo hiking shoes. These beauties have taken me up a few trails so far, all in comfort and in style: up Miller State Park, to see the breathtaking peak of Mt. Monadnock and, of course, strolling around a few local ski areas. They sure look different when they’re all greened-up!
The Ferrox GTX Lo falls under the speed hiking category, a classification I wholeheartedly agree with. Taking “speed hiking” at its word, I also trail ran with these. Though they are slightly heavier than I would like for that particular activity, they provided solid ankle support on uneven terrain. As far as hiking itself goes, these are the lightest I’ve ever tread in while still providing a traditional sole; Lowa’s exclusive Monowrap technology is designed to offer excellent stability without adding heavy components.
Between you and me, I’m a sucker for a pretty shoe and this one doesn’t disappoint.
“She loves me…”
- Four eye-popping colours to choose from! Who says outdoor gear needs to be boring?
- A super light, breathable upper (Yay, Gore-Tex!); I couldn’t ask for better on those sweat-tastic summer days.
- Excellent traction when scaling steeps or treading sheer and slippery surfaces.
- Amazing arch support and overall comfort.
- Truly versatile active footwear; they’re like the ATV of the shoe world.
“She loves me not…”
- Really tricky sizing… I had to go a full size below what I would normally be in and they were still a smidgen too big. Make sure you try before you buy!
Overall, I would totally recommend this hiking shoe for anyone looking for a lightweight, supportive option. As it is generally less bulky than a traditional hiking boot, they also would serve as great travel companions for the outdoorsy adventurer.
In September 2014, you can win your own pair of LOWA boots! Click here to find out how to enter our contest.
Winter is coming,
