Shipshewana is known for its Amish culture, its enormous flea market and Amish country cooking and crafts. Discovering Morton Street Coffee in the midst of Amish farm culture was both surprising and enjoyable. I enjoy Amish country cooking, it’s a favorite of mine but there are moments when I want a fresh salad, a sandwich and a hot chai tea. Those are not found in an Amish restaurant, so options are a pleasure.
One of the gourmet sandwiches offered with a side salad at Morton Street Coffee
Morton St Coffee offers gourmet coffees, teas and a selection of sandwiches, soups and breakfast items. One breakfast item that caught my attention was the Blueberry Baked Oatmeal which I hope to try on a future visit. The cafe has a limited selection of sandwiches; five appear on the menu, as well as an additional sandwich as a daily special. Along with the sandwiches there are two salads offered; an oriental grilled chicken salad and a pineapple pecan chicken salad, in addition the daily special list offers a salad. When I visited the daily sandwich special was quite unique: an olive, cashew sandwich on homemade grilled honey oat bread. I liked its unusual flavor. It reminded me there are many ways to create a sandwich. For those who want to follow Morton Street Coffee and see their daily specials look them up on Facebook.

The atmosphere of Morton St Coffee is restful and cheery. I particularly loved the small touches, the counter sign which says, “Delighted you’re here.” the fresh flowers, free wifi (with a purchase) and the fresh baked items. The cumulative effect of these items leaves you looking forward to returning.
