A Wild and Windy Escape
Sometimes a quick get away minus the long flight and passport is just what we need for a few days away. Time in nature can rejuvenate our spirit and the Outer Banks of North Carolina is one place you can find just that. This region is filled with wild windswept beaches, historical lighthouses, protected dunes, bird habitats and a variety of enjoyable activities for every age and interest.
For those who enjoy life on the wild side there are kite boarding lessons. During my visit to the Outer Banks I had a chance to watch kite boarders in action; it was pure pleasure to watch them as they flew across the water. According to their website, Kitty Hawk Kites is the largest and oldest hang gliding school on the east coast. They offer kite boarding lessons and say that this region is one of the best places in the world to kite board.
A day trip with the Corolla Wild Horse Fund to see the wild horses, now living in protection in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge is an experience to remember. The drive out to see the wild horses is an adventure unto it’s self! You reach the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge via four wheel drive jeep as portions of the roads are over rough terrain and beach. Seeing the wild horses and coming upon them unexpectedly is a sight I will always remember. The many and varied beaches of the Outer Banks are a delight. You can enjoy especially quiet walks in the spring and fall when the temperatures are still comfortable and there are fewer tourists visiting. I found the sights of the protected dunes, wind swept ocean and native birds particularly exquisite.
