Escape to a Hammock

The image of an island hide away complete with a hammock blowing in the breeze calms my mind when I dream of escape from every day life. Along with the beautiful calmness of that image comes the precious memory of a night spent sleeping in a hammock on the pacific island of Rota. What a gift my wet tent became. It allowed me to consider a hammock as a viable sleeping option, thus creating one of the most beautiful memories of my life.

As I lay there listening to the water, watching the night sky I felt content. Even better was waking through the night to truly experience the movement of earth’s rotation as the constellations appeared to move across the night sky. The next morning my humor was forced to kick in when I was left with at least a hundred tiny sand mite bites on my bare legs! Despite the itching bites I wouldn’t trade that night. It was worth every bite, a million times over.

The next time you decide to splurge on something for relaxation consider the simplicity of a hammock. If you want to watch your budget and still find a way to enjoy a relaxing hammock consider building your own, using these directions.

There is something truly delightful about relaxing in a hammock. Whether you are napping, reading or just watching the beauty of the night sky it brings a sense of escape and a touch of the islands to your life wherever you are.

I found this super cheap DIY hammock idea on Life Hacker. People could try out the concept at home to see if they like it before buying special items to make a more elaborate one. It’s basically rope and a sheet. Fun for the kids to try instead of a treehouse!
