Every time this luxury coach – er school bus – rounds the corner of our driveway in Singapore to pick up my daughter, I laugh. The traditional school bus yellow doesn’t hide the plush interior – including a small step that extends so that the children won’t strain their little legs climbing on board. The deluxe accommodation also offers well-appointed seatbelts as it ferries pre-k through 12th graders – seated according to grade – on their thirty minute ride to and from school each day.
Each morning, I half expect to see a tour guide sitting in the jump seat, waiting to begin her recitation of the history of Singapore and surrounding sights, but no such luck. As for my first grade daughter, Elisa, she takes it all in stride. “Anything special you noticed about your new bus?” I asked, smirking. “I sat next to a second grader,” was her only response.
