The NGO I work for runs a union for domestic workers in Chennai’s slums. They’re making significant headway in lobbying the Tamil Nadu government to set a minimum wage and ensure fair and safe working conditions for this group. Very cool. One of the things I love most about Tamil culture is the sense of sisterhood and comaraderie between women. For instance, women often call each other akka (sister) as a sign of respect. Girls call women older than them auntie. I hear these terms every day, but notice other customs as well. ...
