Women in a Man’s World

In honor of International Women’s Day this past Monday, I’m sharing a picture of a group of female autorickshaw drivers in Chennai.  The auto driver my friends and I hired for the day introduced us to these women, who happily posed for a picture.   They were so friendly!

These women are definitely operating in a male-dominated industry.  I don’t know the statistics, but I can count the number of women auto drivers I’ve seen in the last 4 1/2 months on one hand.  Good job ladies!

Hello! I’d like to know more about what you’re doing in Chennai. I’m coming to KYM from May -August and would like to know some fellow female travelers. Please get in touch with me! -Jacqueline

Hi Jacqueline! I’m volunteering with a women’s rights NGO in Chennai. My placement finishes this week though and I’m heading back to the US to search for a full-time position in international development. You will like it here, though it will be quite hot. Good luck!!
