Aung San Suu Kyi Remains Under House Arrest

May 29th, 2007

The news came on Friday that Noble Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi will remain under house arrest in Myanmar, formerly Burma. The 60-year-old Suu Kyi has been held for more than 11 of the last 17 years.

While no official announcement has been made by the Myanmar government, a car was seen entering her compound on May 25th. Since she is not allowed visitors, it’s assumed that it was an official government car delivering the news of her continued detention.

Suu Kyi is the head of Myanmar’s National League for Democracy party and has been held under house arrest continuously since May of 2003. A Buddhist, she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her peaceful and non-violent struggle under the country’s military dictatorship.

She has given up much personally to help save her country from this dictatorship. She was unable to visit with her husband as he battled and eventually passed away from prostate cancer and she remains separated from her children who live in the U.K. She is not allowed any phone contact with the outside world.

Suu Kyi has suggested that travelers stay away from Myanmar so as not to support the current government through tourist dollars.
