Wanderlust & Lipstick Newsletter – June 2010

Summer greetings, Wanderluster!airplane

This month is a busy one for me. Having just returned from Kauai, I’m off to southern Cali for a series of talks (see Events at right) sponsored by PacSafe, and then on to NYC for TBEX, the Travel Bloggers Conference at the end of the June. Hoping to then settle in to enjoy the Seattle summer!

But I’m not the only one keeping busy. Michelle Duffy, aka WanderMom, will be co-hosting a night of travel on June 3 at the Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland, WA. Free Traveling with Kids book to all registrants!

I’m also eager to announce a very special Women-only Yoga Tour to Bhutan for April, 2011 (details below). Led by Susan Weis of breathe books, this is a chance to explore the spiritual side of the Kingdom through yoga, meditation and Ayurveda.

FemaleNomadFemale Nomad and Friends by Rita Golden Gelman
This is the follow up book to Rita’s very popular, Tales of a Female Nomad. Rather than a continuation of Rita’s story, however, this is an anthology of travel-related essays with a food theme and includes contributions from dozens of talented and observant writers. Royalties for this book are being donated to help slum kids in New Delhi so that they can attend a vocational school! Rita is also asking that people host a global dinner party on June 18th to help us all connect through food. Available on Amazon

Putumayo South Africa – Various Artists
It’s World Cup Soccer time and all eyes are on South Africa. Makes sense that the folks over at Putumayo would release this compilation of music from SA. This historically troubled and politically-charged country has often churned out internationally recognized musicians. A number of them, including Miriam Makeba and the Soweto Gospel Choir, are featured on this upbeat CD. Available on Amazon

In the DVD Player
180South180° South with Yvon Chouinard and Douglas Tompkins
Every adventurer will dig this journey to Patagonia with Jeff Johnson as he documents his travels along the route to South America in pursuit of Patagonia Inc. and North Face founders, Yvon and Doug. The surfing and climbing footage alone will leave you with envy but there’s a great story here and lots of interviews and a message about the state of the environment. Not yet available on DVD but it is in theaters.

WanderGear Review Briggs & Riley Move Business Case
Move Business Case by Briggs & Riley
I’m not always in the need of a business-type laptop case, but when I am, I’m hooked on the Briggs & Riley Move Business Case. It’s trim when it needs to be but also can hold a host of items without feeling too bulky. Best features include an outer pocket for my cell phone and 3 separate interior pockets. Read more…

Just when you thought fried dough couldn’t get any better… Stephanie at Food Freeway introduces us to Mexican Bunuelos. These Central American desserts are easy to make by assembling the dough and then just lightly frying them. They include a dusting of cinnamon and sugar to taste so they can be as sweet (or not) as you like.
