Wanderlust and Lipstick Newsletter – November, 2007

November, 2007

Dear Wanderluster,

During my book tour this past month, I traveled east to Walla Walla, WA and Moscow, ID; north to Bellingham, WA and Vancouver, BC; and then south to Eugene and Medford, OR and on to the Bay Area in California.

I couchsurfed my way through the Pacific Northwest and met some really wonderful people along the way (THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING SUCH GRACIOUS HOSTS). I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

It was also fun to meet so many Wanderlusters face-to-face who came to my book signing events. Keep traveling, girls!

Read my blog posts for the inside story and photos about the trip. Don’t forget to subscribe via RSS feed or email so you don’t miss any of my entries.

Wander Recommendations
Travel Book
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
– This chronicles the author’s year-long journey through Italy (eat), India (pray) and Bali, Indonesia (love). She cracks open her heart and pours it out for all to read, sometimes in a poor-me kind of way but mostly in a yeah-I-get-that kind of way. The book is split into 3 sections and you’re sure to completely identify with at least one of them.

World Music
Tanto Tempo by Bebel Gilberto – Bebel is the daughter of famed Brazilian musician Joao Gilberto and singer Miucha. This CD draws from her roots and is a beautiful mix of sultry Brazilian jazz and sambas filled with complicated guitar rhythms. Don’t expect to dance to this Brazilian CD as it’s definitely mellow mood music.
World Film
Outsourced by John Jeffcoat – An American sales manager gets outsourced to India to train a new call center. This is a fun movie highlighting the vast differences between American and Indian cultures. Funny, insightful but sometimes a bit unrealistic, this indie film should be coming to a theatre near you.
Travel Tip
This great tip is from Kathleen, a Couchsurfing host in California:
“While there is no charge for using sites like couchsurfing.com or for the lodging itself, be the sort of guest who doesn’t drain the host’s financial resources. Invite the host to dinner or make dinner yourself one night for the host. You may also want to reimburse your host for any household items you’ve consumed. Remember, it’s not an all expenses paid vacation. In some countries people may not accept something in return but you can be sure that most will be grateful that you offered.”
