June, 2009
Greetings, Wanderluster!
Summer has arrived early here in Seattle and I’m thriving right along with my garden. This is the time of year when I stay close to home so as to fully enjoy the spectacular Pacific Northwest but I will be taking a few extended weekend trips including to Yellowstone National Park and Salt Lake City. Jon and I will surely be headed out on a few motorcycle camping trips as well.
In more immediate news: I’m very excited to announce the release of the second edition of The Essential Guide for Women Traveling Solo.
The first 10 buyers will receive autographed copies and FREE SHIPPING!

Wanderlust and Lipstick Tours
Considering one of these very special small-group tours? Don’t delay!

BHUTAN – PHOTOGRAPHY
Join award winning photographer, Brenda Tharp, as she leads a 12-day, co-ed photography tour to Bhutan beginning September 23rd.
The Himalayas are your backdrop as you capture images of the harvest season (wheat and chili peppers) and cultural festivals. Included are light treks and visits to monasteries, all while you have the opportunity to learn from a professional photographer and experienced tour guide. See the full itinerary.
Ever want to experience India in all its frantic glory? Come with me on the women-only trip in October. We’ll visit some of the country’s most iconic locations including the Taj Mahal and the ghats of Varanasi as well as festivals such as Diwali and the Pushkar Camel Fair. This trip is a well-rounded mix of culture and sightseeing – sleep in the desert, shop for fabric and volunteer at a home for widows. See the full itinerary.
Watch this video on Varanasi to spark your India Wanderlust.
BHUTAN – BUDDHISM
Join me for this co-ed Buddhism-focused trip to Bhutan in November (immediately following the women-only India trip). Take part in a meditation class, meet His Holiness Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye, hear lectures on Buddhism and visit the Haa Valley, until recently closed to tourists. See the full itinerary.
Join both the India and Bhutan trip for a discount!

April & May winners!
Two months. Two contests. Three winners. Two WanderGals won a pair of chicBuds for being the April contest winners. Lisa H. sent in a travel CD packed with Hawaiian sounds and a yet to be named gal was randomly chosen for having signed up for this newsletter. Congrats to both!
And the May contest winner was Donna P. She won a pair of Cinzia sunglasses (valued at $100+) for forwarding this newsletter to the most future Wanderlusters. Yeah for Donna. Enjoy your summer with these very cool shades.

World Eats
Myscha’s got a wonderful Turkish flatbread recipe that is the perfect item to serve with a summer salad. Like all of her recipes, it just takes a few ingredients and is easier to make than you’d think. Serve it up with fresh tomatoes or try it with a hummus dip or tapenade.
For more ethnic eats, see Myscha’s blog, World Eats and Readers’ Treats.

Wander Recommendations
On the Bookshelf
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
People have been telling me about this book for a long time and I just now got around to reading it. While the writing itself has some flaws, the book does provide a rare behind-the-scenes perspective of remote Pakistan. This is the remarkable story of one man who builds schools (beginning in the mid-90’s) in a forgotten area of the world. He has continued his hard work after 9/11 despite increased prejudice against Muslims and hatred towards Americans. Available on Amazon
In the iPod
The Idan Raichel Project
Recorded over several years during Idan’s own tour, this collaborative CD includes talented artists from an unlikely variety of countries including Uganda, Columbia and Cape Verde. Somehow, the “project” works, bridging cultural divides by presenting songs in Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, Creole and Swahali. A true peace accord in and of itself. Available on Amazon
In the DVD Player
Enchanted April
I was pleasantly surprised by this story of 4 English women who come together to share an Italian villa. Each of them is transformed in their own subtle way during this stay. They actually manage to shake off some of their uptight and drab lifestyles through the interesting friendships they forge and new realizations about the men in their lives. Available on Amazon
This is the lightweight (hence easy to pack) Ferrosi Hoody from Outdoor Research. Even though we’re heading into the summer months, it’s a great jacket to have with you on wooded hikes, where temps can drop quickly, and for camping trips where evenings can be quite cool. I wore this throughout my time in Bhutan – stuffing it into my daybag when the sun was beating down and wore it during the cooler Himalayan days and nights. Read more…
