Wanderlust and Lipstick Newsletter - September 2008
Happy Fall, Wanderluster!
Welcome to the September newsletter - with a little something for everyone
The India book is in the can, as they say, and I’m so excited to have this little (he-he) project completed. Now, I need to get the word out. Do tell your friends, neighbors, colleagues and baristas and, if you’re a journalist and would like a review copy, just let me know!
Now that I’m emerging from this book, I’ve discovered that summer’s over. We here in the Northwest have been bemoaning the fact that we never did get a proper summer at all. Despite gas and airline ticket costs, many of us have been heading south just to get a little bit o’ sunshine. As for me…
I spent August in Park City, Salt Lake City and Santa Fe.
Unless, the travel gods smile down upon me, I’ll be spending the fall in Seattle where I’ll be busy promoting For Women Traveling to India, teaching workshops and signing books.
My next scheduled trip is Bhutan in April. Won’t you join me?__________________________________________________
Wanderlust and Lipstick Tours
Dreaming of Bhutan or Africa? Join a tour, bond with other Wanderlusters and experience some of the most remote places on earth.
In April ‘09, I’ll be leading another small group on an amazing 12-day trip to BHUTAN. This tiny Himalayan country is nestled between Tibet and India and sees very few travelers each year. This women-only tour will include some very special opportunities to meet the beautiful Bhutanese people. We’ll take a cooking class, visit a nunnery and donate books to school children. Here’s your chance to travel with other WanderGals and experience one of the world’s emerging travel destinations. See more details.
(Psst - Now’s the time to go. The government recently raised its daily tariff so future trips are sure to be more expensive.)
For a visual journey of Bhutan, visit my WanderGallery.
JUST ANNOUNCED - A 15-day Migration and Hiking Safari in Tanzania for February, ‘09. Led by Leslie Nevison of Mama Tembo Tours, this amazing adventure provides the opportunity to meet people from the Datoga and Maasai tribes as well as view wildlife, including elephants, monkeys, lions, hyenas, hippos, zebras and more. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

August Contest Winner!
Last month’s contest winner for sharing the love by forwarding the Wanderlust and Lipstick newsletter to the most people was Romina. She forwarded the newsletter to more than 220 future Wanderlusters! I’m trying to figure out if I even KNOW that many people. Way to go, girl. You win a pair of Teva sandals!

World Eats
The cool weather has arrived early here in Seattle and perhaps in your ‘hood, too. That means it’s time to hunker down and get warmed up! Try Myscha’s recipe for European mulled wine to heat up those cool evenings! As Myscha explains, it’s OK to use boxed wine, so it won’t break the bank if you’re serving it to guests.
For more recipes, peruse Myscha’s blog, World Eats and Readers’ Treats.

Wander Recommendations
On the Bookshelf
The Penny Pincher’s Passport to Luxury Travel by Joel Widzer - It’s not that I’m a know-it-all. I realize there are LOTS of things I can learn about traveling and saving a few bucks while still getting grand service. But I had no idea how many great tips I’d glean from this book. From car rentals, to hotels, to flights, to credit cards, Joel, covers it all and helps us non-Trumps get the most out of our travel dollars.
In the iPod
Rough Guide to Indian Lounge
In the spirit of my book being completed, here’s a tribute to the subcontinent. This CD is a groovy mix of tabla, sitar and electronica. It’s all together chill, hypnotic, chant-astic and shoulder-shimmy worthy. Musicians on this collection include: Bombay Dub Orchestra, Tribali and Bally Sagoo. Fortunately for me, I’m not familiar with any of the artists on this CD - which means I have a lot more exploring to do. Can’t wait!
In the DVD Player
Across the Universe
I like the Beatles. And, I kinda like musicals. But a rock music movie featuring Beatles tunes and characters named Jude and Prudence? Well, Across the Universe actually delivers on both storyline and music in this love story set in the U.S. during the Vietnam war. It’s fun, entertaining and easy to dance to.
WanderGear Review
Eagle Creek’s Tarmac Plus One
I’ve been dying to tell y’all about my new luggage find ever since returning from Salt Lake City last month. You already know I’m a light packer and I highly encourage you to never pack so much that you have to check luggage. That means your carry-on can’t be any larger than 22″. I didn’t know I could do it, but on my recent trip to Utah, I brought Eagle Creek’s Tarmac Plus One which is under 20″. I was able to pack several changes of clothes, toiletries, electronics, gifts for my hosts AND return with goodies from the Outdoor Retailer Show. Read more…

Medical Kit Contest Winner
I had a number of really great responses to the question, What’s in Your Medical Kit? Ideas ranging from Emergen-C to Monistat to potty seat covers. Julie P. was the winner, whose name I pulled out of a, no not a potty, a hat. Julie wins a Savvy Traveler medical kit (including syringes, bandages, meds and more) from Adventure Medical Kits.
