Wanderlust and Lipstick Newsletter - March 2008

Hello Wanderluster!

Thanks to the hundreds of women who turned up at the New York Times Travel Show in the Big Apple last weekend! Our panel of women travelers had a great time sharing our hot tips and fielding questions about various aspects of travel.

February’s winner of a subscription to travelgirl Magazine was Jacquie of Canada. Thanks to all of you gals who forwarded the newsletter to continue the growth of our Wanderlust community and congratulations, Jacquie!

Wander Recommendations

Travel Book
The Best Women’s Travel Writing 2007 - This roundup of women’s travel stories is both entertaining and enthralling. While the anthology includes tales by Frances Mayes and Barbara Kingsolver, the real gems are from the (relatively) unknown writers such as Kayla Allen, Laurie Weed and our very own Wanderluster, Kari Bodnarchuk. You’ll get inspired, laugh-out-loud and simply shake your head at some of these adventures.

World Music
Breathing Under Water - Anoushka Shankar - It’s fair to say that this CD is the most commercial of all of Anoushka’s releases as it includes 13 digestible (for Westerners) short songs rather than just a handful of longer ragas. Despite its commercialization, it is quite lovely and relies heavily on her sitar playing with orchestra in the background and guest singers such as Sting and her sister, Norah Jones, in the foreground. For those not used to Indian music, this is a great place to start.

World Film
Once with Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova
I’m not trying to jump on the bandwagon (no pun intended) and this probably isn’t technically a foreign film. However, Once is a must-see movie. It’s a low budget ($100,000 to make), quickly filmed (in about 2 weeks), sweet love story with a fresh soundtrack. As someone said on the Oscars, this is the little film that could. It’s a reminder that all of us, filmmakers, musicians and travelers alike, can complete any goal we set out to do. It just takes a little persistence, creativity and hope.

Product Review
I’m all about packing light. I haven’t had to check a bag in years (unless it’s a second bag filled with souvenirs from my destination!) so the Victorinox Trek Pack Plus is right up my alley. I traveled with this for a month in India. It’s small enough to use as a carry-on but versatile because it easily changes out from a roll-aboard to a backpack in about a minute. When arriving at the airport, I can easily roll it around but on stairs or a cobblestone street I can carry it on my back. It includes convenient mesh pockets inside, several pockets that are accessible from the outside (including a place for your shoes) and a small day bag that can be zipped onto the outside for easy carrying. See a full review including info on their latest backpacks.
