Wanderlust and Lipstick Newsletter - August 2008

Hello Wanderluster!

I’ve just returned from:
Nedonna Beach on the Oregon coast by motorcycle (lovely but long ride in traffic).

I’m going to:
Park City (for fun) and Salt Lake City for the Outdoor Retailer Show; Santa Fe (including an opera); and Walla Walla to visit a friend, drink wine and eat Walla Walla onions :-)

Wanderlust and Lipstick Tours
Dreaming of Bhutan or Africa? Join a tour, bond with other Wanderlusters and experience some of the most remote places on earth.

Prayer Flags

In April ‘09, I’ll be leading another small group on an amazing 12-day trip to BHUTAN. This tiny Himalayan country is nestled between Tibet and India and sees very few travelers each year. This women-only tour will include some very special opportunities to meet the beautiful Bhutanese people. We’ll take a cooking class, visit a nunnery and donate books to school children. Here’s your chance to travel with other WanderGals and experience one of the world’s emerging travel destinations. See more details.

(Psst - Now’s the time to go. The government recently raised its daily tariff so future trips are sure to be more expensive.)

For a visual journey of Bhutan, visit my WanderGallery.

JUST ANNOUNCED - A 15-day Migration and Hiking Safari in Tanzania for February, ‘09. Led by Leslie Nevison of Mama Tembo Tours, this amazing adventure provides the opportunity to meet people from the Datoga and Maasai tribes as well as view wildlife, including elephants, monkeys, lions, elephants, hyenas, hippos, zebras and more. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Share the Wanderlust Love and Win a Pair of Tevas
Christina is the new record holder for having forwarded this newsletter to 58 people. Thanks, Christina!

With summer still hanging in there, you, dear Wanderluster, could also win a pair of sandals from Teva (that’s my Teva-clad feet at Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan!)

Simply forward this email to all of your travel loving friends. The person who forwards this to the most people in August will win a new pair of sandals for summer. How easy is that?! (Please note that you must use the link here in order for me to track the forwards.)

Not only will sharing the love give you a chance to win, but you’ll be doing your friends a favor by letting them in on the hip tips, information and fun in each Wanderlust and Lipstick newsletter!

Go Teva! Go Teva! Go Teva! Go Teva! Go Teva!

On the Bookshelf

Swahili Chic

Yes, I judged this book by its cover. I knew I had to have it the moment I saw it. Swahili Chic explores East Africa’s diverse culture, architecture, history and traditions through stories and photos by Bibi Jordan. It’s literally filled with exotic photographs that are stunning and plentiful. An excellent coffee table book whether or not you have a love of Africa.

Introducing Spam Allstars
Spam Allstars

Definitely not Spam but definitely Allstars. From the moment I loaded this CD into my iTunes, it has stayed in rotation there. This Miami-based band blends funk, Latin, hip-hop, horns and electronica on this CD. The band’s members have played with a wide range of musicians, from rock to jazz stars, and they bring with them diverse backgrounds, creating a blend that includes everything but the kitchen sink. Shake your bootie!

The Great Match
Great Match

This is the lovely story of three sets of soccer fans doing all they can to watch the 2002 World Cup. The catch is that they live in the Sahara Desert, Mongolia and the Amazon rainforest. I think this could quite possibly be one of the most beautifully filmed movies I’ve ever seen.

WanderGear Review
If you’re concerned about keeping your toothbrush germ-free (and who wouldn’t be if I put it that way?), then the iZap from VIOlight is for you. Using UV technology, this handy little holder zaps away 99.9 percent of germs and bacteria on your toothbrush. Toss out that nasty holder you’ve been using. At under $20, iZap can be the newest fun item to add to your toiletry case. Read more…
