Wanderlust and Lipstick Newsletter - April 2008
Hello Wanderluster!
Tomorrow I’m off to Bhutan! After a few days touring Bangkok, I’ll be leading a 12-day tour through Wild Card Adventures. I am so excited to be visiting this tiny Himalayan country with a group of fellow avid travelers. Internet access willing, I’ll be blogging about the trip on the Wanderlust and Lipstick site as well as on the Seattle PI site. Be sure to subscribe to my postings via RSS or email to stay updated.
Shortly after returning, I’ll be heading to the Bay Area for a series of workshops at REI. I’d love to meet you if you’re in the area in June!

Wanderlust in the News
I am humbly grateful that these gals took the time to read and review my book. They’ve got great websites well worth exploring so please take a gander:
Travel Betty - What better nom de guerre to take on than Travel Betty? She’s from the Bay Area and, like me, she’s encouraging fearless travel amongst us gals.
Gallagher’s Travels - Mary offers up all sorts of travel info on her site. “World View with an Edge” is her tag line and her edginess spills over into her tips, hotel recommendations and much more.

Wander Recommendations
On the Bookshelf
The Alchemist by Paul Coelho
This is an inspirational fable about the Wanderlust that inflicts so many of us. The story follows Santiago as he pursues his dream of getting to the Egyptian pyramids to find his treasure. He meets many a sage along the way but discovers that, while travel expands our world inside and out it also helps us to see and appreciate what our own backyard has to offer.
In the iPod
Extraordinary Rendition by Rupa and the April Fishes
There is definitely nothing ordinary about this CD. Rupa is a doctor who lives in the Bay Area, is of Indian heritage and has lived in France. She draws upon Punjabi, French, Arab, Gypsy, Latin and Argentinean influences, and writes lyrics that incorporate lessons learned as a physician. There’s Manu Chao-leanings throughout the CD though it appears he played no official part in it. This is a “ten” for me and the best CD hit my iPod this year.
In the DVD Player
Light of My Eyes with Sandra Ceccarelli
This sweet film is part of the Film Movement Series on which I’ve recently gotten hooked. It’s the story of a shopkeeper and her daughter and their unlikely involvement with a (very handsome) chauffer who lives in a fantasy world. It’s wonderfully narrated and both lead actors won awards at the Venice Film Festival. Italian with English subtitles.
WanderGear Review
I was beside myself with excitement when I discovered this new camera gadget, the Xshot Monopod. I’m bummed that I didn’t have one when I was traveling solo in India. However, it’s already packed for Bhutan. This little monopod allows you to screw your camera to it and then take a photo of yourself without having to trouble others to take your photo. The telescopic arm ranges from 9 to 37 inches which is plenty of room to get you, some friends and a scenic background into the pic. Read more…
